  • Joseph B. says: Hi my wife and I lived there from 2005-2009. We lived in the Village of Black River right off one of the back gates of the base. The village is very quiet 10-15 minutes from Watertown and Carthage and 5 minutes from Calcium and their Super Wal-Mart. The village is nice and quiet though (they have only 2 cops) and quite pretty. It seemed like a really good neighborhood for kids (we don't have any) and it's part of the Carthage Area School District which is probably the best one in the area.

  • Amy D. says: I currently am living here at drum and as Joseph said Carthage area school is an excellent school district. They have a ys program on post that is always doing things and going places so a nice place for the kids to hang out. black river or Carthage are nice areas. Quite a few places right now for sale in the area. Watertown continues to grow with more building of stores and restaurants.

  • Jill H. says: We have been stationed at Fort Drum since June 2004 you def need to like to cold weather we have lived on base which was nice and they have really updated alot lately. It is about a 15 minute drive into the mall/shopping area. The winter is awfully cold with lots of snow and late starts on post because of it. Alot of activites to do in the summer months the nearby towns always have something going on. We live in Carthage about 10 min from Drum and really like it there.

  • Dun B. says: As far as the school systems definitely Carthage Central - its one of the best! You don't necessarily have to live in Carthage though. Parts of Fort Drum bus the kids as well as Black River which is a small village outside of post and a very nice family place!!

  • Sarah F. says: We moved here from Bliss and it was a big change. We have taken advantage of seeing the sights (NYC Gettysburg Maine Philly etc...) and it's been great but looking forward to getting out of here in 6 mos. The winters are hard and if your not used to it just walking inside target can be painful in below zero weather.

  • Amy D. says: We have lived here for almost 2 years and are also on post and in the Carthage school district love the schools. My husband and I are from just south of here so yes the winters are BAD but if you are people that want to try out some new things like skiing or snowboarding hunting snowmobiling then come and try it out. I am a firm believer that only you decide to make any base what you make of it. Good luck =)

  • Leslie D. says: We've been here for a few years and frankly can't wait to leave this spring. There is NOTHING to do here. Someone said they loved the people hate the cold. I love the cold and hate the people. There's just no way to make this place good. I don't know anyone who enjoys it here and everyone who has left is so glad to be gone. It was my idea to come here and I've spent the last three years apologizing to my husband because we are both 150% miserable.

  • Rhiannon W. says: I cannot say anything all that bad. Just be aware that any kind of housing on or off post is hard to find. Especially if you have a larger family. There is just not enough housing in the area. We have lived in several different places but Drum was the hardest to get some sort of housing for our family. On post wait lists are extremely long. Off post housing you will want to look at yourself before renting it. Anything decent rents out extremely fast. Even the not so decent stuff does actually. Local landlords want every bit of the BAH and then some generally speaking. I have no idea how the locals afford to live here.

  • We use to have a babysitter who went to Carthage and the stories we heard about the other schools are horrible. I think Carthage is deff the best place to be with school aged children
