Prepare yourself for the heat. Anything above 110F is HOT no matter if it’s a ‘dry heat’ or not.
There are a lot of outdoor things you can do, as mentioned be prepared for heat during the day and cold during the night. This is desert area. Familiarize yourself with dangerous animals in the area and what to do when you encounter them.
The BX has had generally good feedback and I found positive remarks about the very new shoppette.
Luke AFB is almost like a suburb to a large urban area of Scottsdale, Phoenix, Glendale and Mesa. Glendale being the closest to base. With Phoenix and Scottsdale close by, you have quick access to a large airport via a great freeway system.
Westgate has all the best restaurants and theater, is just down the street and so is the Peoria entertainment and sports district.
If you get tired of the heat take a trip two hours north to Flagstaff, where you can ski during the season or at least get a breather from the heat.
Luke is the largest F-16 base in the USAF and is a training base for several job fields, they run flights from 7am to 10pm M-TH and flights can run as late as 11pm some nights, Friday is the same except they cut flights short and you can usually hear flights ending by 6pm.
As with most military installations it’s what you make it. Some you will like more and some you will have to work harder to ‘like’ them. Be adventurous! Since you can’t change anything, you might as well make the best of it.
+Animal Shelter: The shelter in Glendale is called Sun Valley Animal Shelter.
