My husband and I lived in Fort Stewart for 3 years. When we first moved there we lived in Apartments outside of Gate 7. We then moved into a house outside of Gate 8. We loved living so close to the gates but not having to live on post. We lived off post the whole time we were there so I do not know much about housing on-post. Since Hinesville is so small this was not our favorite place but it was nice to be about an hour from Savannah. I think we would have like the area better if we lived close to Savannah but they moved my husband's unit down to Hinesville right before we got there. I would not move over by the Walmart. The areas around it are not the best. We had the best luck finding a house with Holtzman Realtors for rental homes. Just make sure you actually go look at the house before you rent it. DO NOT just go off pictures especially if you have pets. If you want to be a little further out (about 20-30 mins away from post) there are some nice houses/areas in Richmond Hill and Ludiwici.

hi everyone my name is Tiffany and my husbsnd and I are doing our first pcsing the beginning of June. I could really use some help finding a house to rent in a good family friendly neighborhood. This is what I'm looking for. . 3 bedrooms 2 bathrooms with preferably a garage but not mandatory 1250-1500 square feet if possible for no more then $900/month. I know this may not be fully attainable but I would like to try. I have a three and a half year old daughter and a nice neighborhood is a must.  I won't be working right away so it has to stay within our budget till I can get a job. Thanks or all your help in advance. I've been all over the internet and its hard to know what areas of hinesville are the best.

My husband I and our 3 dogs(2 pugs and a boxer) are being stationed to Ft Stewart come the end of the year. Ive heard mixed reviews on Hinesville. Can anyone please list neighborhoods I should stay clear of and which ones I should look in to for renting a house? My top three must haves are: 1. No more than 20mins to the base. 2. Rent must be in the budget no more than $900 a month. 3. Pets must be allowed and house must have a fenced yard. And of course it would be nice to live in a house that is in a nice neighborhood and have central air/heat.  Also if someone knows the best place online to look for rentals or a realtor that could help me out I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you for all your help!

If anyone needs a house...I have one for rent that's just remodeled with granite floors and fireplace. It has new paint inside and out and a one car garage with a storage room and a walk in pantry. Also has a large interior laundry room. Sorry we can’t take pets either. People don’t realize the cost involved after they damage a house. This house is only 4 to 5 miles from everything including the Fort Stewart gate. 3 bedroom//2 bath 950 a month.

Hi me and my fiance will be moving to Fort Stewart this July. Am unfamiliar with area as I have lived in Maryland and now coming from California. I have been doing alot of research in homes whether to live on post and off. I am use to military rules and think its best we live off post. Can anyone give m eideas on best places or areas to stay off post. I was looking at Independence or Governors Square. I have noticed the more luxurious or new the higher the cost. As of right now he is in the field and wants me to start looking at places. I will be by myself during deployments at times so safety is a big concern of mine. Look forward to your comments or suggestions

Cassandra L. says: This is South Georgia so expect it to be HOT!!!

We chose to live in Richmond Hill. It's about 20-30 mins from post but LOTS of military families live here. Worth the drive for the school systems and access to Savannah.

As far as things for kids and family…There's a place called Jump N Jacks (http://fortstewart.patch.com/listings/jump-n-jacks) that has plenty of indoor play areas with bowling arcade for the bigger kids and inflatables for the little ones. Great place for kids!

First Baptist Church of Richmond Hill - great children's programs from the nursery to teens. Have a great military ministry and made us feel at home!

Regarding my experience at Ft. Stewart as far as medical….I delivered my son at Winn Army Medical Center. As a 15 year critical care nurse I am very hard to impress with healthcare. I expect excellence. We moved during my 7th month and I really considered going off post. From arriving at Ft Stewart in May until I delivered in August the healthcare team at Winn continually impressed me. My delivery experience was wonderful and I could not have asked for anything more! Highly skilled and professional. The facility was extremely clean and state-of-the-art.

I also suffered an injury while there. The ortho clinic was amazing!

I struggled with the decision to use the Richmond Hill clinic off post simply for convenience. They do not have a pediatrician at that location. However I went with that decision and have not been disappointed. They have an incredible pediatric nurse practitioner and we have been very happy with the care.

I also used the Richmond Hill clinic for my personal healthcare. Equally impressed! The facility is clean. The staff is friendly. And ON-TIME!! I have never had to wait past my appointment time for more than 5 or 10 minutes. And when that happened they were very apologetic!

Rosanna M. says: It depends we lived off post in two different houses and the first one we never had problems because we had no trees in our yard. Our second house has like 10 pines trees in the yard and we kept having huge palmettos but we uses Home Defense spray around our house and it killed them.

Ft Stewart is the crappiest base we were ever sent to! If you have pets good luck trying to find a place a to live. Some of the units are very racists and they always loose paperwork. My suggestion is to try to get on base housing because hinesville is full of slumlords ESP the apartment complex behind Walmart.. STAY AWAY FROM THAT PLACE.l.

Casey H. asks: Hi.. my family will be pcsing to Stewart around Aug.. any suggestions on where to live that is close to base but not in a bad area? I know RH is a good place but we dont really want to live that far away! TIA =)

Saralynn B. says: Are you looking to buy or rent?

Angi P. says: Midway is a nice Area

Lynnette B. says: We live in an apt complex right outside gate 7 the columns of indepence. nice apts. a little pricy but nice however there is a waiting list.

Kimberly B. says: Lynnette that's where we're moving! They're very nice but she's right kind of pricy.

Lynnette B. says: Do u know what apt yet?

Rochelle L. says: My husband and I rented a house on E Oglethorpe after living here for a month with one of his buddies. we were headed home from visiting his sister in NC and barely noticed it from where it was tucked into the woods. We are only five minutes from gate 3. But about 15 to his troop 3-7. Only problem is a local women owns our house and doesn't advertise her properties anywhere .

Casey H. says: We are looking to rent most likely... just dont want to like 30-45 mins away from base..

Elaine R. says:  There is a two story house next door to me for rent through Exit realty. I live off airport rd which is about 10 min to main gate 5 to gate 7 and probably 7-10 from gate 8. Depending on what time of day and which is open :) its very quiet and we enjoy it

Nicole T. asks: Anyone stationed or been stationed at Ft. Stewart? We will be heading there Julyish and just want to know what it is like. Thanks!

Bri W. says: We were stationed there for almost 5yrs. We lived in Hinesville the 1st year which is right outside of the base but it was too small for our liking. Pretty much all they had was a Walmart. I have heard they have grown but not sure how much. Richmond Hill is a great community to live in but pricey. My kids played soccer in RH. I was very pleased with it. Savannah is a decent drive from base (about 45min) but we loved it there. We lived there for 4yrs. I do not have any info about base housing but the base was pretty big and they were building new houses when we left in 2009. If you are not from the south it does take some getting used to. I am a midwest girl so I was not used to the heat or the bugs. It never snowed while we were there but the 1st winter we were gone they got about a 1/2 in or so. It also didn't rain that much either but if it stormed it usually stormed pretty bad. I think we only got one bad storm from a hurricane while we were there.

Jennifer J. says: I was there years ago. I already knew the area so it wasn't bad. My brother Is stationed there now & Hinesville has really grown. So has the base. It isn't that bad. Hinesville is a small town but we've been to smaller. Savannah is about 45 min to an hr away.

Mary S. says: That was our first duty station back in 04-06 we LOVED it! Loved it so much we plan on going back to that area when hubby retires!

PCS'ing to Ft. Bragg says: I was born and raised in Richmond Hill/ Savannah area...we were stationed at Ft. Stewart for 8 years...my mom and siter are both real estate brokers and cover the three countys surrounding...if you need a rental or want to buy...call Karen 912-665-2943 she is awesome and will help you!!! :) I would recommend living in the Berwick Plantation area....Richmond Hill if you have children! :) Good Luck with your move.

Janet R. says: We are moving there at the end of March... anyone know much about Ludowici area??

Bri W. says: Lupe my kids went to Windsor Forest and it was one of the best in Savannah. I always researched the schools in the area on schoolmatters.com before pcsing.

Jennifer J. says: Ludowici is tiny tiny but the rent is cheap. My brother lives in Glennville & has a 3br 2ba for $400/mo. Compared to Hinesville it could be worth the drive. I lived in Ludowici once & hated the commute on the deer infested road

Loved living here hated 3rd ID more for the fact that of the 22 months we were there my husband was gone 17 of it...such is the life of this Division. I enjoyed living close to the beach as I am a beach girl but Hinesville left a lot to be desired....definitely head to Savannah or my favorite place the Outlet shops in Darien as when I was there I enjoyed it....and then there is Jacksonville Florida...simply a great place to go to shop to go on vacation and if you want to stay at the Beach for cheap...Make a reservation at Mayport Naval Station....the lodge is on the beach....if your unit is deployed you were able to make a reservation up to a year in advance it cost all of about 56.00 a night for an ocean front room....we had such a great time.....close to St. Augustine Jacksonville Beach...we did not want to leave....and being close to Savannah and the riverfront shopping and the Beaches there....other then being in Hinesville itself who could not love Fort Stewart....it was hard to leave!

A little overview of our area for the newcomers: We are currently @ Stewart and live in Richmond Hill. The drive for us takes around 35 mintues from where we live (Southside Richmond Hill). It is a really nice community and very family friendly. The townhomes in the area are new and very afforable. Most of the single family homes in the area are relatively pricey. Post is very small but adequate. The schools in RH are very good but the preschool program is run off of a lottery (February of the year before) and I do not believe they accept 3 y/o's. There are tons of activites for families and quite a few recreational type activites. The city just started a Farmers Market on Tuesday nights at a large park in town with lots of local goodies to buy. Also there is a Family Clinic in Richmond Hill (Richmond Hill Medical Home) which is really great since it is right down the road. They do family care scripts and immunizations. Pretty much everything else medical wise you have to go to post for. I hear quite a few people also live in the Georgetown area which is right next to Richmond Hill. Good Luck on your house and school search!

We love Stewart! There is so much to do between Savannah, Hilton Head, Jacksonville, Charleston and all of the surrounding beaches. This is our second tour here and we love it! The weather gets very hot and humid in the summer, but the winters are mild and there is a two month period in both the spring and summer where you just cannot beat the fabulous weather!

Savannah is a short 40-45 minute drive from Stewart and it boasts fabulous restauarants and southern hospitality. It is a beautiful city!

The Commissary and PX are decent and the hospital is really beefing up it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s support of beneficiaries and Soldier care. They are quite patient centered and have also opened up a clinic in Richmond Hill to meet the needs of beneficiaries who live in the surrounding communities.

We have a son who attends the CDC on post and we could not be happier with the care he receives there. MWR provides a lot for families and youth to do.

When it comes to living off post, you have a couple of choices: Hinesville, Richmond Hill, Glennville, Pooler and Ludowici. You could live in Savannah, but that is about a 45-60 minute drive, depending on where you live.

Hinesville is the main town just outside of Fort Stewart. We live in Hinesville and we love it. It is a town of 30,000. It has a super Walmart, Lowes and several restaurants. The school district is large (Liberty County) and has two high schools.

Richmond Hill is the next town that I recommend. It is about a 30 minute drive from post. You will find more housing developments and what my husband calls a ?¢‚Ǩ?ìbedroom?¢‚Ǩ¬ù community. There isn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t a lot of industry there and it is more suburby, but many live there. If it wasn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t for the commute (which my husband hates) we would live there. The school district is not too large, but it is very good. You are closer to Savannah there.

Ludowici is a very small rural town where the big papermill is. I teach third grade in Ludowici and love it. It is 15 miles south of Hinesville. Many families live there too because they want a lot of land.

I can get you the name of a great real estate agent who does sales and rentals if you would like. You can also just search online for some homes too. The housing prices in Hinesville are lower than in RH, but there are probably more homes in RH.

Welcome to Fort Stewart and Savannah! Hope ya?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ll love it as much as we do!

Army Community Services (ACS) is handy with information for spouses new or seasoned. They have classes like AFTB I & II (Army Family Team Building) and tours and maps as well. ACS is located next to the PX along with a playground and a pavilion with picnic tables. Check out the RELO Program too. Relocation Specialist can help you with dishes, folding tables/chairs, and mats/cots for sleeping if you get your housing before your furniture arrives and it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s a FREE service

I LOVE HOW CLOSE WE ARE TO THE BEACH. Hilton Head Beaches in SC are pet friendly during certain times of the year.

The weather is amazing. My Tulips are in bloom. At the time of writing (7 am) its already 68.

For any reason to have a celebration / festival, downtown is sure to be involved.

During GA History Week, the museuems and historic homes offer FREE admissions.

With all the tourism, SCAD students, convention center and two universities, anyone looking for culture and entertainment, Savannah does well for such a small City.

You must do the trolley or ghost tour more than once. Everytime you learn something new from different guides!
Traffic moving out of Savannah is a nightmare. For a small little Coastal City, you wouldn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t think it would be all that bad!

I hate that the city does not encourage RECYCLING & the schools do not teach the kids to Recycle.

I wish they prohibit cars to go down River Street.

Flipcam entry give away

Hunter Army Airfield, Savannah, GA :

Nestled in the heart of Savannah, HAAF houses the 3rd Infantry Division. Fort Stewart is located within a forty five minute drive to Hinesville.

Flipcam GiveAway Entry: We have been here at Fort Stewart for 4 years. It is a nice post about 40 miles outside of Savanah. We are about 2hrs from Jacksonville, Fl. There is something here for everyone. We have beaches and woods. Savanah is one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in the south. There is lots to do in downtown with its cobblestone streets, art galleries, shops, resturaunts, etc.

Ft. Stewart is in Hinesville and it is a small town. No mall, one movie theater, and little to do. Savannah is only about 45 minutes away and that?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s where everything is. Lots of sun, the weather there is really good year-round. Let me know if you need more info. about specific areas in Hinesville or Savannah.

My husband is stationed at Ft. Stewart but we live in Savannah (Southside ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú Georgetown). We just PCS?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢d this month but already love the place. It is very similar to our hometown, Houston. He says the drive is not a big deal. He goes the ?¢‚ǨÀúback way?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ down 144, what they call the ?¢‚Ǩ?ìGreen Mile?¢‚Ǩ¬ù although it is actually 20 miles. My classes at SCAD begin in January so we will be heading in opposite directions every morning. Downtown/historic Savannah is very much like the Garden Distric of New Orleans. Lovely parks, incredible architecture, and great food all make for a very walkable, dog friendly city ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú just be aware of your surroundings, especially at night.

Thank you everyone for all of your information.
Anyone know of good neighborhoods on where to live off base near Stewart?

We were hoping to get onbase housing b/c of it being 1st station but the wait is 3-4 months long. Also if we get off base housing how can we lease and get out of it if we get onbase housing?

Thanks

My hubby and our family are at Stewart right now for in-processing (we are stationed at Hunter 45 min away). It is gorgeous. As I type this, I am sitting in Army Lodging. The best inexpensive hotel I have been in a long time. Free internet, free continental breakfast, no dishwasher, no no oven, ver clean and well taken care of.

**Remember, you pay for the lodging out of your pocket and the Army will reimburse you 100% for 10 days ((this works at any hotel/motel when PCS-ing)) the only question is when. My husband flew out here from Cali and our 2 & 4 year old and myself drove out. Was not that bad. Def enjoyed it. Make sure to keep ALL receipts and keep track of your mileage, also weigh your car before and after at a pubic scale if you are doing a Partial PPM (partial do it your self move).

The base is large and seems to have ALOT of things to do. They give all newcomers lots of briefings and information on the base and recreational activities.

**Make sure to enter through gate 1 only until you get a decal for your car. The weather here is gorgeous and I heard they have a mild winter.

We got here in June 2010 coming from Ft Leavenworth KS. I agree with Ashley on the shopping but driving to Savannah is not to bad. The post is great and has lots for families to do?¢‚Ǩ¬¶?¢‚Ǩ¬¶now keep in mind over half the base is deployed and due to come back this fall so it might get a little crazy but right now it is a great duty station for us. Plus being only a hour away from the ocean is pretty great.

I have been at Fort Stewart since April. We PCSed from Fort Campbell, KY. Overall, I love the area. People are extremely friendly and helpful. Most of the areas around Hinesville are nice, of course it depends on where you go in town. I was a bit disappointed at the shopping and food choices here in the area [off post] but it is nice to be able to drive 30-45 minutes away to Savannah and only a little bit further to the beach. The actual base is nice. It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s pretty small and easy to maneuver. There are lots of things to do on base for great prices. There are two bowling alleys, laser tag, paintballing, splash parks, swimming pools, mini-golf, a place called the tree house for the younger kids. They also do movies in the park frequently which is really fun. Overall, I am extremely happy with this base.
