Hello I am a recent newlywed to the army andmy huusband is stationed at Fort Knox KY. We  have had trouble with the housing office not returning calls.  How do you guys deal with the housing office and all the other long processes that the army is giving us? I don't know how any of the stuff works because I though on post living would be much better because it's cheaper and alot more convient for my husband but with all the trouble we are having I'm reconsidering the idea. Can someone help me with the army life and all the crap they give you? Thanks

Flipcam Give Away Entry:

There are several towns to live in: Radcliff, Vine Grove, Elizabethtown…some even live in Louisville. The BAH is not enough to cover housing expenses (at least E5 and below)

Housing on installation?

I live off post but I have a lot of friends who live on post and they really like it. I know the wait list is very long and housing is limited. They are actually tearing down a lot of old housing and building new housing. Housing off installation?

We rent off post in Elizabethtown (20-30 minutes from post), and we LOVE it! We found our house through AHRN.com. Northern Elizabethtown is better because you don’t have to fight as much traffic. I’ve heard that a lot of the neighborhoods in Radcliff are more trashy, but I have several friends who live in Radcliff who have very nice houses so I really think it just depends on what you get.

Prices…we got in before all the landlords raised the rental prices due to BRAC, so we have a great rent price, but I know others aren’t as fortunate. Utilities are decently priced except for electric which goes sky-high in the winter time.

Traffic is bad at 4-5PM on 31W, no matter where you live.

Housing on installation?

The Chestnut Glen housing (E5-E6) is pretty good, a little small where there are no basements and very little storage. I have not had to deal with maintance yet, but everyone in the community center is very helpful when you need ice melt, permits for fences, air filters ect. I imagine maintance is the same way and they are always around the neighborhood, I have not heard anything bad about them.

there are very few off base apartments available and most are a rip off to military. The rent is good when you first get there, but often times they landlord will raise the rent as soon as the first lease is up so you either move or foot the bill. To get security deposits back, some of the apartments are rediculous and pretty much want the place in better condition than when you moved in.

Amber submitted this review to participate in my flipcam Give Away:

We lived in the Craig apts, which is TDY housing. Comes fully furnished. It’s perfect for just the two of us. If I had a problem, someone would fix it quickly. The only thing that sucked was the entrance door was not working properly, so it would make a loud slamming noise everytime it was closed. The other housing I’ve seen looks very nice and modern. I have not been inside any of them, but I’ve heard they’re nice.

Do not move to van voorhis housing! They are taring these houses down to build better housing, so you might have to move again with in a year or so! Not to mention all the construction dust sucks! But all the other housing areas are really nice, most of them are brand new or getting remodeled!

We chose to live on base after much thought. We went on the list for the Chestnut Glen housing and were told it was a three to four month wait. Three days later we got a call saying we could move in. The Chestnut Glen complex is nice. Not what I expected for on base housing ( I have never lived in it before so no comparison) So far, we have not had to call matnance or anything like that. You can fence in your yard, in any area, but then they don’t take care of the lawn, so we have not.

We choose to on post housing and enjoy it. I have learned that it is all how you perceive things. While yes there are some downsides to housing, the long wait list, the inconsistent time frames, the lack of yard maintenance, and sometimes the burden of not having a garage; it’s still a benefit to some.

There are a handful of housing areas to choose from here at Fort Knox. There are Van Voohris townhomes, Chestnut Glen duplexes, Maple Ridge single family homes, Pritchard Place single family homes, Morand Manor duplexes, North Dietz duplexes, South Dietz townhomes, Anderson Green single family homes, Pressler Grove townhomes, Littlefield Loop townhomes for enlisted.

We live in the Chestnut Glen area. The rooms over here range from 2 to 6 bedrooms. They are all 1 story homes. 2 and 3 bedrooms are duplex houses that share a fire wall with a neighbor. The 5 and 6 bedrooms are in fact 2 duplexes together, yes that’s right you would have 2 kitchens, 2 laundry rooms, 2 living rooms, etc. Each duplex is approximately 1555 square feet.

The houses in Chestnut Glen have wood parquet flooring except for the bathrooms, kitchen, breakfast area, and laundry room which has linoleum flooring. The windows in the living and dining room are LARGE, as well as the rest of the windows. They definitely let in a lot of natural light.

The bedrooms are good size as well, and the master bedroom in the 3 bedrooms has their own bathroom with dual sinks and a walk in closet.

The houses have a small storage shed in the front and that is about it. There is a large closet in the hallway of the house leading to the bedrooms as well. The houses’ walls come in 4 different colors; an olive green, mocha, café, and cream colors. It’s nice to have a house that is not solid white!

The downside to most of the housing here on post, is that fences are not included. They are in fact an out of pocket expense if you so chose to have one. You can rent one from either MWR or from a local company out in town. There is also an option to build your own fence if you choose.
