Leeann O. asks: Does anyone know anything about the hospitals on or around Ft Knox KY. It looks like I will be delivering our son there but wont be able to be there until I am past the 30th week. Any information would be great.

We got to IACH for everything medical. There’s a lot of great people there, and some not-so great. I love Kelly Haworth and Dr Limjuco for on-post pediatrics and pediatric nurse who is also a lactation consultant Sarah Peirson.

For OBGYN if you are pregnant I would recommend going to Clark Memorial hospital up in Louisville, ESPECIALLY if you want to have a natural low-intervention birth. My birth experience at Ireland left a lot to be desired. CNM Mary Akers is wonderful but she is no longer at IACH…she is attempting to open a birth center in Elizabethtown but it’s still in the works and not opened as of 2011.

There is a La Leche League that meets in Elizabethtown monthly. There are also a lot of natural birth, doulas, and breastfeeding resources up in Louisville.

To participate in my flipcam give away Leeann added this info: The on post hospital is horrible, especially OBGYN. They only address one problem per appointment, can never get two children back to back appointments, only schedule appointments 2 weeks in advance, but then are often pretty booked so you only have one option for time. Urgent cases are usually not able to be seen same day, so I have spent plenty of time in the ER with children with high fevers, strep, ect. You have to be careful what doctor you get, if the name doesn’t sound English and you don’t speak other languages, don’t take that doctor because they do not understand English well and little will be accomplished. I have heard good things about the off base doctors, but have not had the opportunity to deal with them because we live on post and need to change our tricare plan if we want off post doctors

There are several towns to live in: Radcliff, Vine Grove, Elizabethtown…some even live in Louisville. The BAH is not enough to cover housing expenses (at least E5 and below)

Amber submitted this review to participate in my flipcam Give Away: We’ve been to the emergency room twice, and it was excellent! Doctors and nurses know what they’re doing, and are friendly.

Ireland Army Community Hospital is pretty much the only medical establishment the military is allowed to use. Everything about the hospital seems rushed, like you are inconveniencing the doctors and nurses. I have only had to deal with pediatrics and the obgyn so far. Pediatrics was alright. They didn’t listen to everything I had to say and were continuously cutting me off when I talked to them. Once I got the message across, they did address all the issues I was having with my son, so you just need to be persistant and make sure you make them hear everything you have to say. The in office visits with the obgyn are fine, they are rushed but they listen to everything you say and try to address your problems. In labor and delivery, they act like you are a huge inconveniance to them. They do not listen to you at all and no matter what you go in for, they think you think you are in labor. They monitor the baby and then if you are not in labor send you home. The doctors and nurses act like they just do not care that you are also a person and that you might have come in because you yourself are having issues. If the baby is fine, you are fine and you better just deal.
