Great cities to live near Camp Pendleton: Temecula Murrieta Menifee Winchester Fallbrook Oceanside Carlsbad Vista Escondido Bonsall just to name a few. We have lived in the Temecula/Murrieta area since 1997 and we LOVE it! It's family friendly with great schools close to shopping and quick access to the freeway for Camp Pendleton commuters. Although Oceanside is a bit closer to Camp Pendleton - If you are thinking about buying a home - your dollar will go a lot further in the Temecula/Murrieta/Menifee area.

Housing on installation?
We have lived in two housing areas. Stuart Mesa (which is now run by Lincoln properties) was a great place. We loved the pool and the playgrounds. We also loved in DeLuz housing which is the only housing on base NOT run by Lincoln properties and it is also the only housing with full house air conditioning!!! Housing off installation? There are a lot of Marines that has bought houses (like us) in Murrieta. It is about 40 minutes north of base. We love the schools in our area. Houses are affordable too!!

We live off base in south Carlsbad and love it. This area is pricey with some rental homes, apartments, and townhomes but BAH will still be a little short. We chose this area because of proximity to base and #1 reason is schools. You will get less square footage for your money in south Carlsbad but it is worth it. We can walk to the beach and have access to the best schools in Carlsbad. I will enter school information in that category. Oceanside can be a little sketchy with higher crime which flows into the schools. Homes are less expensive in north Carlsbad or Carlsbad Village area and schools are still alot better than Oceanside. The commute is lengthy to inland areas of San Diego like Rancho Bernardo and 4S ranch and even worse to Temecula and that direction. I don’t have any knowledge of on base housing.
