I am PCSing in February to Aviano and i would really like to know about the area and how stressful is it.

I have a new born and 5 yr old both girls. So my wife and I are concerned about this being a rough time when we get there.

Hi I will be PCSing to Aviano. Im so excited but nervous. I will be traveling with my pet. He is a terrier mixed and I heard its hard to find houses with dogs. Does anyone know any good places to look? I also wanted to take COT leave before I got there so I was wondering how that would all work out. I guess any type of help would be great how is Aviano should I take my 06 Nissian Altima?

Hi! My name is Angela and I'm currently stationed at Aviano AB. I have a website dedicated to life at Aviano AB that I would love people to check out. I talk about festivals base events and everyday living. There are also a few pages dedicated to the different cities restaurants and stores in the surrounding area. Please come visit the website and hopefully get helpful information from it! Thanks! http://avianodolcevita.blogspot.com/

Aviano AB, Italy

The air base is about an hour north of Venice. It’s located in the farming country of Italy, at the base of the Dolomites.

http://www.avianoclassifieds.com Good place to look for houses, cars..pretty much anything people are selling!

We are here currently and have been since August 2010. Installation is nice, but the italians work in most all of the offices and they get siestas instead of what we consider regular lunches and sometimes it takes a while to accomplish things!

Italy is beautiful and the atmosphere is very different! Living here is what you make of it! The base itself may annoy you a bit, but if you make sure to take the opportunities presented to you and TRAVEL!!!!!!! That is the way to make the best of it and make some amazing memories! It also can take a long time for a spouse to get a job! So be prepared to take up a hobby!

While I agree with most everything Martha said, the one thing I don’t is “base housing”. I am here presently living in BTL (Built to Lease) housing and we have 4 vacant houses in our neighborhood alone and it is ‘PCS” season. Most people choose to live on the Economy to get the full “Italian Experience”. Which is shortly lived usually and they move to BTL housing eventually.

Daycare is and always will be a problem no matter what, the CDC can not support the slots needed. They do not allow home day care facilities either which needs to be changed but will never happen since there is no “base housing” and I’m sure the SOFA agreement has something to do with it.

As for the jets, to us it’s the sound of freedom so we don’t ever complain about them flying, we love it!

Base housing is dirt cheap, living on the economy(my son does) is very expensive, most of the flight line lives at least 30 mins. away so they don’t have to hear the jets, also right now there’s a 2 mo. waiting period for base housing. The cost of gas rations just went up to 94 euro from 85.EVERYBODY eats at the spaghetti house lol, it’s http://www.facebook.com/l/641d1;true.commisry, bx, post office, shopette, and laundry are all in a very short walking distance of each other.getting any paper work done in a timely manner is almost impossible when in processing. it takes a couple weeks to get everything straightend out. hope that helps. oh, I also just found out there is a wait list for daycare I don’t know how long it is though. be wary of the vendors in the bx. you can get it cheaper on the economy.

Oh, and: Getting married in Italy is quite a process, my son came home to get married, it was easier.
